  2. Given all the speaking activities, the learner will be able to accurately pronounce critical words and phrases for traveling in Spanish speaking countries.
  3. Given the listening activities, the learner will be able to discern the different basic words and phrases (at a minimum the phrases used in the warm up video as these are repeated throughout the other activities).
  4. Given the speaking activities (online and in person conversations) the students will gain a minimum level of comfort needed to use the words and phrases learned in the classroom with native speakers.

Lesson Description

This lesson can be done individually or as a class, however, this lesson plan is written in the format that the lesson would be completed in an in-person classroom environment. If this lesson is being completed online have class discussions be completed in discussion boards and all group activities be posted in a separate discussion board by one group member. All class video activities will have to be done individually and responses recorded in a discussion board among students.

Learning languages is best done by practicing speaking, listening, and reading. This lesson combines all three activities with the use of various technologies.

Instructor Pre-work: 10 mins

  1. Instructor will write or type the 30 phrases in the video below onto a slide to project during class. The instructor will write tally marks next to each phrase during the Warm Up Activity to track which phrases were chosen by students.
  2. Instructor will make a class Flipgrid for students to post videos. https://flipgrid.com/

Grading: 10 points + bonus points (2 point maximum)

Students will be graded solely on participation. This includes the use of Spanish and actively completing the activities. Points are detailed in the activities below. Each student can earn 10 points per class for a total of 60 points throughout the 6 classes. There is a maximum of 2 bonus points available per class during the prework/homework warm up activity for a maximum of 12 bonus points.

Student Pre-work: 10 mins

Before class, students should review the following video and choose 3 phrases they think they would use most often and write them down to bring into class the next day. Students should also create a blog on Google Sites, WordPress, or Wix to record these words. This will become their portfolio of critical words/phrases. Students must create a new blog post for each completed activity where blog posts are mentioned. This also helps record when students complete activities. Links to blogs should be submitted to the instructor via email or discussion board.

TIP! Encourage students to pause the video and practice saying the phrases as they go along.

Warm Up Activity: (Objective 1) 30 mins

Each student will take turns presenting the phrases they chose in the prework/homework to the class. The other students should be able to respond by saying what the phrase is in English. Those who answer correctly should be awarded one bonus point on their overall score. This activity is to get students to start talking and using the words and phrases in front of other people out loud. It also helps the other students with their listening skills because they will hear certain phrases multiple times.

The instructor will write tally marks next to each phrase that was chosen by each student and project this data on the board. This will show what the class thought was most important collectively. The class should discuss why the top three became the top three. This will show which phrases should be memorized first for travel.

Grading: (2 points + bonus points)

  • Students will receive 1 point each for participation by presenting their phrases.
  • Students will receive 1 point for showing that they wrote down the phrases from the prework activity on their blog.

Speaking Activity: 10 mins

For online classes this should be a regular activity. For in-person classes this should be assigned as homework or students should find a private, quiet setting to record their videos apart from other students in their class so they can focus on speaking and listening. (May require headphones w/ microphone)

Using the class flipgrid set up by the instructor, students will be assigned to groups of 2 and should practice speaking by recording some of the phrases they have learned into a conversation. For example:

  1. Student A will record a video saying:
    1. Their name and where they are from in Spanish. They will then ask what the next person’s name and where they are from in Spanish.
  2. Student B will record a response video doing the same thing.
  3. Student B will record a video asking 2 more questions of their choice.
  4. Student A will record a response video to those questions.

Students should discuss in their response videos if they understood what their partner was saying and if they felt that they knew how to respond correctly or not.

Grading: (5 points)

The instructor should take note of participation during this activity for grading. Students who meet all above criteria for participation should receive 5 points.

  • 1 point for posting a video
  • 1 point for responding to a video
  • 1 point for viewing each video (2 points total)
  • 1 point for recording using Spanish phrases
